Daprato Stations of the Cross

Several churches within the Diocese of Toledo have a set of the plaster Stations of the Cross by Daprato studios in Chicago. (Offhand, the basement church of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, the outdoor Stations of the Cross at Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue, and St. Patrick in Bascom -- I'm sure there are others.) When one sees them often, it's easy to overlook details; for example, the small child gathering nails for the crucifixion above.

Our Lady of Consolation, Carey

Initial plans for the basilica were created by Cleveland architect Emile Uhlrich, who also designed Our Lady of Victory basilica near Buffalo, NY (more about him HERE). Later, the Albany, NY firm of Gander, Gander and Gander was selected to complete the building.

Sorrowful Mother Shrine, Norwalk

The "other" Sorrowful Mother Shrine (not the more famous one in Bellevue). This chapel was commissioned by the Fisher Brothers, natives of Norwalk who moved to the Detroit area for the Fisher Body Company. Interior photos and more of the story HERE.

St. Joseph, Monroeville

The entrance to St. Joseph in Monroeville faces a New England-style town square with various monuments.

The church was designed by the Cleveland architectural firm Cudell and Richardson; you can read more about them HERE. They also designed Glandorf's impressive St. John the Baptist church and St. Michael's in Fort Loramie. Original plans for Monroeville include an enormous tower -- see drawing HERE.

Theodore MacManus: Ad Man, Catholic

Theodore F. MacManus, one of the pioneers of modern advertising, started his agency in Toledo in 1903. Born in Buffalo, NY, he developed many of the early ad campaigns for the automotive industry. You can read about his local history HERE.

He and his family later moved to the Detroit area, and he commissioned the building of the original stone chapel of St. Hugo of the Hills church in Bloomfield Hills. You can view a tour of the chapel HERE.
