Ludwig Cemetery, Sandusky County

Ludwig Catholic Cemetery was the original cemetery for Millersville St. Mary's parish, from 1857 to 1887; many of the tombstones are in German. The cemetery is located on County Road 12 in Jackson Township, not far from Bettsville.

Gong Show

Some time ago on this blog, we were wondering about an unusual object near the altar in old photos of Peru St. Alphonsus and Bascom St. Patrick. (See pictures HERE.)

Thanks to the online Benzinger Brothers catalog, we now know it is a gong, used similarly to the bells at consecration/elevation.

Celtic cross stone in the foreground marks the grave of John Quinn, collector and patron of Irish literature and modern art. His sister Clara was an Ursuline sister in Tiffin (Sister St. Paul).

Dr. Seraphin Bauer

Mausoleum of Rev. Dr. Seraphin Bauer (1835 - 1911) in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fremont.

"Hoch W." is the abbreviation for Hochwuerden, "Very Reverend" in German. (Thanks, Jeffrey.)


Photo of Dr. Bauer from 1862. Bauer was an early pastor of St. Joseph in Maumee and founder of St. Rose in Perrysburg. From 1862 to 1911, he served as pastor of Fremont St. Joseph, where he was known for his elaborate Christmas services. He was also a friend of Rutherford B. Hayes.

Found three illustrated catalogs from Benziger Brothers. silversmith and metalwork; religious articles and pictures; and vestments, banners, and regalia. If you type "Benziger" in the search box and set the media type to "texts", you'll find several hundred of their books, as well.
