Sandusky: A Patrick Keely Design

Over at the Sandusky History blog, we learn that Ss. Peter & Paul church was designed by the noted Irish-American architect Patrick Keely.  See post HERE.

Edward Furey of the Keely Society notes:

We don't know for sure, if Keely visited Sandusky, or simply sent plans requested by the pastor. In some cases, we do know, from letters, that Keely would send plans, and then a local building superintendent would follow and adapt them. In that way costs for construction could be kept down for pastors who wanted an impressive structure. We do know Keely was in Cleveland, while that cathedral (radically altered,) was being constructed.

 

Keely also designed Toledo's St. Francis de Sales chapel.

Some photos from a 1917 "Souvenir of the Consecration and Golden Jubilee of Ss. Peter & Paul Church" program and booklet.  Currently home to mostly Hispanic parishioners, the parish began in 1866 as the second German congregation in Toledo (St. Mary's being the first).  The current church was consecrated in 1917.

SS Peter and Paul Festival

SS Peter and Paul parish, at 728 South St. Clair Street, in Toledo's Old South End will have its annual festival this weekend. The hours will be from 3:00 PM to midnight on Saturday, August 2, and from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Sunday, August 3.
