Quite a Picture
HERE'S a good one. It's a panoramic photograph taken before a banquet at the Ursuline Convent in Toledo, on October 4, 1911. Bishop Schrembs and Archbishop Henry K. Moeller of Cincinnati are in the middle, surrounded by a whole horde of priests. Wouldn't be surprised if every priest in the diocese was there. Click on the picture to enlarge it, and be sure to notice the nuns looking out the windows.
You've Gotta Love the Irish
I found a good story in Lake Port, by Randolph C. Downes. There's a section on the anti-Catholic "propaganda" that's been common throughout American history. Toledo's Irish wanted none of it.
"Upon occasion some travelling anti-Catholics undertook to "educate" the people about the "facts". These usually were punctuated by riotous conduct. Thus, on March 20, 1857, when one Dr. Bement was regaling his audience at Morris Hall on the subject of "popery", several Irish rose in the midst of his remarks on the holy wells of Ireland, and denounced Bement as a liar. They then withdrew from the hall pelting eggs at the speaker."
Let's hope their aim was good.
