Leeper-Geddes House, Old West End

This was used as the bishop's residence, until the present building was finished.

Cardinal Stritch

A medal cast well after he'd left Toledo. Oddly enough, they spelled his name wrong.

Bishop Schrembs' Installation, 1911

Public processions were nothing unusual in those days. Frankly, we need more of them.

Bishop Alter

Here are two pictures from Bishop Alter's installation, in June of 1931. This one's the first three bishops of Toledo. Bishop Schrembs, then Bishop of Cleveland; Archbishop Stritch of Chicago, not yet a cardinal; and Bishop Alter.
Here's the scene at St. Francis de Sales, which had been hastily repaired after a fire in January of the same year. You'll notice the high altar is missing, presumably for cleaning or repairs.
That crucifix is gone, now, as is that magnificent pulpit. Unfortunately, St. Francis de Sales has been the victim of some very questionable management decisions, over the years. What's survived makes that even more regrettable.

This Might be Better

I posted a link to this Library of Congress picture, a while ago, but the link kept breaking. Had to crop it in three sections for posting.
It was taken before a banquet at the Ursuline Convent on October 4, 1911. In the middle are Bishop Schrembs and Archbishop Henry K. Moeller of Cincinnati. The priest with all the medals, behind them, is Fr. Edward Vattmann, who had been an army chaplain. ( Thanks to Kevin Hammer for that identification. )
It would appear that every priest in the diocese was there. If you recognize anyone, let us know. Clicking on the images will enlarge them.
Notice the nuns looking out the windows.

A Brace of Bishops

Two former Toledo bishops join then Bishop Rehring, in November of 1955, for the centennial of the arrival of the Grey Nuns in Toledo. The chapel at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center was dedicated at that time. From left to right: Karl Alter, Archbishop of Cincinnati; Samuel, Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago; and George Rehring, Bishop of Toledo.
Thanks to Kevin Hammer for scanning the picture from a 1955 diocesan yearbook.

Bishop Alter's Installation, June, 17, 1931

From left to right: Joseph Henry Albers, Auxiliary Bishop of Cincinnati and, later, Bishop of Lansing, Michigan; Karl Alter, Bishop of Toledo; and John Timothy McNicholas, Archbishop of Cincinnati.
If they don't look very festive, they had good cause. The Depression was in full swing and that was the day every bank in the country was ordered to close.
The picture was taken in front of St. Francis de Sales, Downtown, then the cathedral of the diocese.
From the 1950 history of Immaculate Conception Parish.

Cardinal Stritch

Samuel, Cardinal Stritch was the youngest member of the hierarchy, in America, when he became Bishop of Toledo. He went on to become Archbishop of Chicago. HERE'S an interesting article on his common sense attitude toward the Cold War.
Three of Toledo's bishops have ended up archbishops. Perhaps I'd better not mention that record. We need to keep Bishop Blair here as long as possible.

Joseph Schrembs, First Bishop of Toledo

The man seems to have been camera shy. I've finally found three more pictures of him to post. Thanks to Kevin Hammer for scanning this one.
