Cardinal Stritch Returns, 1946

Samuel Cardinal Stritch of Chicago returned to Toledo to celebrate the feast of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, on October 2, 1946. He had served as the second bishop of Toledo.

While searching a newspaper database, I found the following article summary:

Fortunately, there is a simple explanation: the database searches full text of newspapers, and sometimes combines articles with ad text in the summary. The database then takes you to the actual page with the article.

(By the way, newspaperarchive.com is a great site for anyone interested in local history, although there is a fee.)

Panis Angelicus

St. Benedict's Mission, 1932

St. Benedict's Mission was started as an outreach to African-American Catholics in Toledo in 1932. Rev. Austin Bork, S.J., was in charge of the parish, first located at 566 Avondale Avenue.
According to the 1932 Diocesan Yearbook: "During the week of May 22d sixty converts, adults and children, were baptized and on May 29th received their First Holy Communion in St. Francis de Sales Cathedral from the hands of Bishop Alter."

Sorrowful Mother Shrine, Bellevue

The final photo shows the original statue at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine, the "Muttergottes." The statue was brought to the shrine from Europe in 1850, and was placed at the top of the main altar. A small staircase was built behind the altar so that pilgrims could walk up and touch the image. The statue was lost in the chapel fire of 1912.

The pictures were taken by some water rat who's probably off messing about in boats.

"Bishop of Lake Erie"

Fr. Joseph Maerder served the parishes at Put-in-Bay and Kelley's Island from 1912 to 1933, and was affectionately known as the "Bishop of Lake Erie." During that time, he lead efforts to rebuild St. Michael's church at Kelley's Island and build the impressive Mother of Sorrows church at Put-In-Bay.

He also maintained a station at Middle Bass Island, named after St. Clement Hofbauer, a German Redemptorist saint. Fr. Maerder translated and published a life of St. Clement Hofbauer as well.

New "bells"

Here at St. Mary's we got our bell back in working order. New bolts, new hammer, and new motor. In addition to that, we have a new digital Carillon system from Chime Systems. It sounds beautiful! Just like the real thing! Anyway, i thought i would post some pictures on it, and of other interesting things i found in the belfry while i was wandering around.

Interesting...July 1920 was probably when the plaster was re-done.

Above and below is the original ceiling on the choir loft level of the church (in the staircase) Despite the water damage, you can still see original designs along the border of the ceiling.
