Did you see the skull & crossbones in photo #2?
There really needs to be a detailed booklet that explains all the imagery, who each statue represents, etc.

I have two small crucifixes that have a skull & crossbones beneath the figure of Christ. I'm wondering if they were drawing on that same sort of imagery, of the Cross conquering death ...

That's one level of it, but Golgotha means "place of the skull". That's the main reason why a skull and crossbones are often shown at the base of a crucifix.
