St. Louis, East Toledo

I finally found a picture from before that boring facade was added. Much better, and actually rather unusual for the time. Peter Navarre's funeral Mass was celebrated here.
Though the parish is closed, Helping Hands of St. Louis is using the property for good.

St. Louis, Custar

The top two pictures appear to be from about 1895-1900. That tower's perfect.
The church was built in 1889.
The old church and school, built in 1864, photographed c1887. They were in the village of Wirtzburg, about a mile and a half from the present church. The school was used until about 1912.
A view of the present church, at the left, from Milton Center.
Thanks again to David for e-mailing the pictures.

St. Louis, Custar

The item St. Louis is holding is the Crown of Thorns, which he acquired. He built the Sainte-Chapelle, in Parish, to house it, along with other relics.

See the Resemblance?

I mentioned that the St. Michael window, at St. Louis, in Custar, is after a painting by Raphael.

Here's the painting for comparison.

St. Louis, Custar

These were e-mailed to me by Mike Doughty, who took them c1978.
I definitely like that tower. Unfortunately, it's now marred by an addition, which would look very good anywhere except tacked on to the front.

The paint job was 70's blah. Looks much better now. The more I see of that lamb, over the tabernacle, the more I'd like to have a close look.

Good windows.

You'll notice the Stations of the Cross weren't there. A lot of things that disappeared in the 70's are coming back. ( Deo Gratias! )
The statue at the top of the picture is St. Louis, Louis IX, King of France. He was a rarity, a saint who was a good king. I'm afraid most of the crowned saints weren't.

St. Louis, Custar

Another item recieved by e-mail. I'm curious about the statues and the stations. They look interesting. In fact, I'm particularly curious about the tabernacle, at the left, and what's above it. Anyone in the neighborhood?

St. Louis, Custar

This is from a tee-shirt. It shows how the church looked before the addition was put in front. Does anyone know how it looks inside?
