Too Much Happening

I'm going to have to take the weekend off.

Too much happening today. I'll post tomorrow.

Old Sts. Peter and Paul, Old South End

This was built in 1866. It's still there, with an addition tacked on to the front, as the school building.

St. Joseph, Monroeville

A bit bland, but respectful. Beautiful piece of stone and, at least, the taberacle is where it belongs.

Sts. Peter and Paul, Old South End

These pictures were taken in the 1960's and, I'm happy to say, there hasn't been much of a change. The stencilling's been painted over, the pulpit lowered, and the side altars simplified a bit, but overall, it's substantially intact. The main altar is an exceptional piece. I'll post a closer view of it tomorrow.
The statues of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Fatima have, unfortunately been removed, along with the collection of relics, possibly Toledo's finest. I'll have to find out what's become of them.

To the left is the statue of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, now in the vestibule. Notice the gold-glass mosaic work on the communion rail. Yes, that's been spared, too. This interior is another of Toledo's treasures.

St. Mary, Norwalk

Stations of the Cross. The pedestals are as impressive as the stations.

Stay Tuned

I'm working on some very good material for this afternoon.

Delayed

I had ISP problems today, which ruined the catching up I had planned. Wait till you see the pictures I have ready for tomorrow.

St. Mary, Norwalk

I hope everyone at St. Mary's is duly appreciative. Have a look at Alex Fries' NEW PROJECT. Do you have any idea how few small parishes have something like this?

St. Joseph, Monroeville

Very unusual columns. The windows are spectacular.

A Few Quick Posts

Things are starting to settle down, comparatively. I'll be able to get back on schedule, shortly.

Right On Target!

Have a look at Annunciations of a New Springtime. There's an excellent post on the "superstar cult" surrounding God's Vicar on Earth. It includes a quote that's amazingly perceptive, from the parish priest of Pentling, in Bavaria. "The Pope at eighty is in excellent form because he feels that he is loved."
Doesn't that say it all. He came from a position where, by merely doing his job, he was hated by far too many. He got to show his true colors and look what happened. Someone has said the people came to see John Paul, but they come to HEAR Benedict. That's true. John Paul prepared the way, by being loved for his personality. He prepared everyone to listen to the message delivered by his successor. People have come to love Benedict for himself, but they've also started loving the message he brings. That fact gives great hope for the future.

By the way, I know just how he feels. Why do you think I'm in such fine form?

The picture was shamelessly lifted from Servant and Steward. Go see the others!

Posts on the Way

Sometime, during the course of the day.

St. Joseph, Monroeville

The vaulting in the aisles. Very good choice of colors.

St. Mary, Norwalk

The first building.
This and the following are courtesy of Alex Fries, of course.

St. Mary, Norwalk

The interior of the first church. Simple and dignified. I like the pinnacles on the confessional.

St. Mary's School, Norwalk

Wonderful building.

St. Francis de Sales

If you're downtown around noon, on a weekday, the Masses are a good way to brighten your day.

Elsewhere in Ohio

There's a good post on St. Mary's, German Village, Columbus, at Leave Your Head at the Door. Beautiful design.

Portiuncula Shrine, Lourdes College, Sylvania

This is absolutely magnificent. I'm not even going to comment, because I can't think of enough superlatives to describe the thing. It was built in 1936, by the way.
Every Catholic in the Toledo Diocese needs to realize just how much of a treasure trove of ecclesiastical design we have, all over the area.

This day is officially out of control

I'll have time to post tomorrow, once the cavalry charges and aerial bombardment settles down.

Show of Hands

This song has an important message for the Church, and all countries, not just England.

Fr. Hannin of St. Patrick's

I posted, back in February, about Father Hannin's work in designing St. Patrick's. You'll find the post HERE. Kevin Hammer has found a picture of him, from Men of Northwest Ohio, published in 1898.

St. Mary, Norwalk

The vestibule in the early 1900's. The saint on the wall is interesting.

St. Alphonsus, Peru

A view, from the sanctuary, showing that interesting vaulting. You can see a portrait of St. John Neumann at the right.

An Appropriate Pose

The 20th century was a time of lies, from start to finish. Few were more lied about than Pius XII.

The Wave of the Future

La métamorphose d'un autel
Uploaded by CHRIST-REDEMPTEUR
All over the world, more and more Catholics are realizing that it's an altar, not a picnic table, and that we're talking to God, not one another.

Day Off

Too much to be done, elsewhere. I'll get back to it tomorrow morning.

St. Joseph, Monroeville

Completely different. I've never seen anything quite like it. Let's start with that odd tower with the even odder finial. Then, the round windows on the first floor. Those abnormally high dormers. It breaks a lot of rules, but it works. Like a strong spice, it's very differentness makes it a significant landmark.
Once again, photo by Alex Fries.

St. Stephen's School, East Toledo

This is impressive. The relief over the door is superb. The scrollwork flanking the window is well done. One question, though, whose coat of arms is that at the top? The shields, lower down, are of the US and Hungary.

St. John, Defiance

Very nice. The cupola-topped tower, crossing turret, and stone trim add a lot of interest.

St. Anthony, Toledo

A beautiful church and its closing is a loss. I can't help think the proportions are wrong, though. The tower is too spindly for the bulk of the building.

St. Mary, Norwalk

Absolutely magnificent.
