Francis!

After much speculation as to which St. Francis (Assisi? Xavier? de Sales?) our new Pope hopes to emulate with his name, we now know it is indeed Assisi.
But hey, they're all good.

Benedict on Beauty & Truth

Pope Benedict noted that visiting churches, art galleries and museums can be "where we can stop and contemplate, in the transition from simple, external reality to a deeper reality, the ray of beauty that strikes us, that almost wounds us in our inner selves and invites us to rise towards God."

Good Shepherd, Built to Last

Cleveland Quarries, in existence since 1868, provided the "Berea Sandstone" used in construction of East Toledo's Good Shepherd church.  The sandstone is quarried in the Amherst and Birmingham areas near Lorain.  An interesting list of landmarks constructed from this stone can be found HERE.

Paulding Church ... ?

This post card is labeled as "Catholic Church, Paulding, Ohio."  Perhaps it is actually the church in nearby Latty, St. Francis de Sales, which eventually became part of the Paulding parish.

Alternatives for News

"We live a culture where opinion is fact; illusion is reality; and the news is stage-managed by partisan spin-doctors."
-- Fr. Phillip Neri Powell, OP

Just my opinion:  If you want to know what is actually going on within the Catholic Church, you cannot depend on national news networks, or much of the larger local media.  You must, at a minimum, supplement your news intake with some of the following:

Annunciation Radio:  Toledo / Sandusky

St. Gabriel Radio: Columbus area

National Catholic Register

Bishop Blair on Pope Benedict's Resignation

Comments from a press conference available HERE.
