Immaculate Conception, Ottoville

Photos & information from the Putnam County Atlas, originally published in 1895

Rev. Michael Mueller was born January 21, 1833 (hey, Happy 175th Birthday) in Bavaria, Germany. He received a common school education in that country, then came to the United States in July 1852. He taught school in Huron, Washington and Crawford counties for four years, then attended Cleveland’s St. Mary’s Seminary for six years, followed by a year at St. Vincent Seminary in Westmoreland county, PA, then a year at Assumption College in Windsor, Canada, then back to St. Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland. His first assignment was at Rockford, Ohio in 1865, and in 1868 he arrived in Ottoville.

Mueller was “the great factor in planning, promoting and constructing this model church, and it will ever stand as a monument to his untiring energy and perseverance.”

St. Martin de Porres

There are niches at both ends of the porch. Apparently, they were made for statues that never were commissioned.

Gallagher Hall, St. Martin de Porres

This, along with the Cathedral School, would easily have my nod for being one of the best designed Catholic school buildings in Toledo.

Announcement

I have a lot of items to post, but no energy to deal with it. That can't last forever, I hope.

St. Martin de Porres

As I've said, St. Martin de Porres has one of the best towers in Toledo.
The basic design is very good.
I'm impressed by the stonework around the entrance, and by the Art Deco influenced reliefs of the Evangelists.

Unfortunately, the full scale sculpture; statues of the Sacred Heart, St. Anne with Our Lady, and a Crucifixion group at the top, are about what you'd expect to find on a cut-rate tombstone.
They're awful. This is the one glaring note on an otherwise excellent building.

Open for comment

I don't think Jeffery ever posted this picture i sent him. I found this picture in our school religion book. I'm leaving this one open for comment.

St. Martin de Porres

One of the best towers in Toledo.

Two Parishes

This was taken at the corner of Eastern and Maumee, in front of Immaculate Conception. Through the trees at the center you can see the tower of SS Peter and Paul. From within a block, or so, there are places where you can see the spire of St. Patrick's and the dome of Good Shepherd. The churches of Toledo don't exactly hide.

St. Peter, Archbold

Those towers are definitely not run of the mill.

St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center

A statue of St. Marguerite d'Youville in the main lobby.

St. Joseph Monroeville

If you're wondering...this is in the inside of the church; the sanctuary to be exact. I know very little of the history of St. Joe's. (the staff there is working on compiling a history...) So the Reconstructed part of it I'm guessing just means a huge renovation. If someone knows more that i do (probably so) please leave a comment.

These four following windows are the sanctuary windows. I can't identify the people but i bet Jeffery can.

I absolutely love this church. It's all my favorite colors in perfect combination. I love walking in there, when there are no lights on, and turning them on and just watching the colors jump out at you as the lights warm up. It's just amazing to me.

St. Martin de Porres

There'll be plenty more over the next few days. At the moment, I'm afraid, I feel like I've been hit by a truck.
