Our Lady of Consolation, Carey Ohio (Upper Basilica)

Anyone know what the Eagle represents? Reminds me of Germany.

Eagles have been used to support lecterns for centuries. Came from being St. John the Evangelist's symbol, and ended up generally representing scripture as the word of God.
The style of it says 1920's, so the German eagles of the 30's aren't far removed.

While this eagle certainly is in an art deco style, the form of the bird is completely wrong for the German Eagle -- as it is for the Austrian and Russian eagles, among others.

true...the German Eagle would have it's head turned and it would be angry looking. Biting someones head off or something.
