Ah, Jeffrey, mankind is not uniform; tastes differ. You (and I) appreciate the majesty of the ornate. But others go to the other extreme and find their beauty in Franciscan simplicity (and schizophrenically, so do I). Of course, most are in between.
Should it happen that you are not already familiar with it, you might want to study the chanoyu tradition -- especially the Katsura Imperial Villa. That would be my (intensely) personal nomination for the #1 architectual structure in the world -- beyond the Taj Mahal, beyond even Rosary cathedral or any of the great Gothic cathedrals of Europe.
And perhaps God has a place for evangelicals in this world.
This is the sort of thing that makes you wonder why on earth anyone is NOT Catholic.

Can you see it?
Maybe with a magnifying glass.
