St. Charles Borromeo

A mosaic of the saint, on the front wall.

Visitation Monastery

I have about thirty pictures, but I'll post them bit by bit.

Blessed Sacrament

The old church, now being used by the school. The arch is very impressive, but the pink is a bit much.
The cherubs look like they could be portraits. Excellent work.

St. Hyacinth

I've been curious about St. Hyacinth for some time, since I'd never been able to find a picture. I have to say I'm impressed.
It's fairly simple, but pleasing, and the details are excellent.
These reliefs are over the front doors.

A quick look through the doors put gettin back for a look at the interior high on my list of priorities. The windows look like they may be some of the best of their period.

The WEBSITE for added pictures of the new altar to their Photo Gallery section.
Excellent work, and much more in suitable for such a fine building.

The Donor

Alex's post on the Sorrowful Mother Shrine, in Norwalk, made me curious, but Kevin Hammer got to the research first. Here's a picture of Margaret Fisher, the donor of the shrine, with her seven sons. All seven of them were involved in the Fisher Body Company. Margaret Fisher's husband Lawrence had owned a carriage shop in Norwalk.
There's information on the family HERE and on their activities in the Detroit Archdiocese HERE.
Looks like a nice lady. My grandmother Emma Garland Smith always wore dark dresses with plenty of lace at the collar.

The other Sorrowful Mother Shrine

This is the shrine here in Norwalk. It was built by St. Paul's in the 30's i believe. Where it stands now was where the former St. Peter's church used to stand.

I was able to gain access to it today, amazingly. The place is always locked, except for summer masses on Wednesday nights. You'd think that a shrine like this would be open at least during the day, or on the weekends.

The "Fishers" mentioned in this tablet are the Fishers who were part of the Fisher Body Company. Hence, where the dough came from to build the place.

St. Hedwig

The original plan for the church, with a photograph of Fr. Simon J. Wieczorek, the pastor at the time of its construction in 1892.

SS Peter and Paul, Old South End

The statues of the parish's patrons were a gift from Fr. Dannenhofer, the first pastor.

SS Peter and Paul, Old South End

In the vestibule, at SS Peter and Paul, is a statue of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, which was brought from Mexico several decades ago.

Surrounding the statue are milagros, small ex voto offerings, usually made of lead. The shape of the milagro often reflects the nature of the prayer that was answered.

The pedestal was originally the base of the ambo. I'm not quite sure I approve of that, but I'll admit it must have rather overwhelmed the fairly small sanctuary.
