I've been trying to think of a post for tonight. I thought of some things but couldn't find the pictures for them...then i came across these.
That's Sister Mary Agnes Link (waving). She lived in this house when the sisters lived in it. She's probably the most lively person in our parish, and i think she's almost in her 90's.
This is in the master bathroom of the Century House. Keep in mind that nobody has lived the house in or used the upstairs bathrooms since 1989 when the sisters moved out and it was converted to a preschool.
Also...once the Century House is gone, i'll be putting something together, either on the website or in book form, with information and plenty of pictures. More details later.

I can't overstate my sadness at the loss of the churches, convents, minor seminaries (Toledo used to have three!), colleges, and other such houses...
ReplyDeleteMy only consolation is that what was built by the faithful once, can be rebuilt.
Still, the sadness of an empty convent in the DoT being demolished while some orders thrive and hardly have room in the novitiate, is bothersome.
Ah well, to everything a time, and they are only buildings, right? The Apostles had less than that, right?
I just have to keep reminding myself of that...
Alex: She certainly doesn't look her age. Nuns are like that.
ReplyDeleteSS: It is sad, but on the whole, the Toledo Diocese hasn't been very hard hit. People tend to forget that. As for churches, comparing what's left with what's been lost has a salutary effect. As for convents, remember that most of the ones that have been bulldozed in Toledo were due to the sisters needing bigger quarters. In other cases, when an order or a location no longer serves its purpose, it's time to move on and make way for someone else. It's always been that way and it always will. The Church has always been too busy to be preserved in amber.
The reason you don't see minor seminaries anymore is because the Church realizes they were a horribly bad idea. Good riddance. As for a real seminary, it wouldn't make economic sense.
Then again, neither does tearing down the "Century House".
Please don't infer I was pro-minor sem...
ReplyDeleteBut the kind of infrastructure like that... They were functioning high schools...
Just sad to see what was developped and built not still be in use.
You are correct though, largely, Toledo has fared better than a good deal many other places...
Had the place been insulated, we probably would have kept it, but it's not, and it would have cost upwards of $50 to do so. She's a beast...i'm really sad to see her go, but i suppose we do have to move on. Hell, i'll be taking a day off of school if they tear it down during the week, so i can take pictures.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Sr. Mary Agnes is anywhere near 90. She's the teacher's aid in my son's Kindergarten class.
ReplyDeleteBut to the young (like Alex), I suppose we all seem ancient.
;-)
I don't even want to think about it. Then again, I often find I've been given the senior citizen discount at McDonald's, so I won't complain.
