Immaculate Conception, Old South End

After rebuilding, from the 1920 fire, was completed, but before the new pews and altars were installed.

  1. Reminds me of the European cathedrals, with even more chairs. Most of them never had pews.

  2. Well, for one thing, they're enormous and pews would cost a fortune. Since the cathedrals are put to a lot of different uses, they'd get in the way, as well.
Actually pews are a relatively new invention. It's only a hundred years or so since people became too proud to kneel on the floor.

  3. This too, is my first exposure to a "pewless" church.
