The Madonna of the Roses, by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. 1903.

  1. With the exception of The Virgin and the Angels, this is probably Bouguereau's finest Madonna and child painting.

  2. It's interesting. Academic painters like this were a laughing stock for much of the twentieth century, then people started valuing beauty again. People have had enough of elephant droppings being regarded as art.
