Comes and Lieftuchter in Johnstown

Toledo's Rosary Cathedral was initially designed by architect John T. Comes, and the massive mural in the apse was painted by Felix Leiftuchter. Their work can also be seen at St. Columba in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Lieftuchter completed the mural in 1918, and it features imagery of World War I, as well as steel mills and industrialization. St. Columba's is no longer open as a parish, but you can read about plans for re-use HERE. St. Agnes in Cleveland was also a collaboration of Comes and Lieftuchter; see a previous posting HERE.

Villanova's Digital Library has a wonderful collection of Catholic church lithographs by the Philadelphia lithography firm of Packard and Butler (later Packard, Butler and Partridge). There are over 400 prints of interior or exterior views of Catholic churches throughout the United States and parts of Canada.

There are several churches from the Toledo Diocese, in Fremont, Norwalk, Fostoria, Tiffin, Upper Sandusky, Peru, and Toledo. Many of these churches are the previous building of a parish. Well worth your time to take a look. Click HERE.

Author Jane Ware has written two volumes on Ohio architecture, "Building Ohio." The second volume is a guide to Ohio rural architecture, and she has a good itinerary for seeing majestic churches in the southwestern part of the diocese:

- Begin at St. John the Baptist in Glandorf (west of Findlay on US 224).
- Continue west on US 224 to St. Michael's in Kalida.
- Still further west on US 224, visit Immaculate Conception in Ottoville.
- Turn south on St. Rt. 66 to see St. John's in Delphos.
- From Delphos, go west on St. Rt. 697, then turn south on St. Rt. 116 for Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia, a village of Welsh heritage.

The book has a lot of detail regarding the "Land of Cross Tipped Churches" further to the south as well. More information on the book HERE.

Franciscans' 100 Years at Carey

2012 marks the 100th year that the Conventual Franciscan Friars have ministered at Our Lady of Consolation Shrine in Carey. The friars are planning two special events: a Mass with Toledo Bishop Leonard Blair on May 25, and on September 22-23, the Minister General of the Conventual Franciscans will visit the Shrine. No Van Gogh . . .

An interesting article from summer 2011 -- the Maria Stein Center of the Society of the Precious Blood was examining a list of art work to be insured, with rumors of a Van Gogh on the premises. (Not impossible, given the order's connections in Europe.) Nothing that valuable turned up, but they are evaluating their collection of religious artwork for restoration. Works by Fr. Paulinus Trost are included; Fr. Trost did murals in several area churches, such as Sorrowful Mother Shrine and St. Peter in Alvada. You can read the article HERE.

According to the St. John parish history, the above building was built in 1901, serving as both church and school. Initially the third floor was used as the church, but space was not sufficient. While a new church was being built starting in 1910, the lower floor was used as the church.

Fr. Aloysius Horn (1899 - 1971), a Fremont priest, had a great love for Christmas. He started the American Christmas Crib Society, and in 1941 wrote "A Christmas Chronicle," a book of vignettes of Christmas throughout the ages.

In 1967, he was invited by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson to be part of the Christmas Tree lighting ceremonies at the White House. (Above photo is from an obituary.)

The above article about St. Rose in Lima is from 1935. Note that "a helium halo is used behind the head of the Infant."

In a Catholic Chronicle interview, Fr. Horn said he had been inspired by the elaborate Christmas festivities planned by the Rev. Dr. Seraphin Bauer of St. Joseph parish in Fremont.

There's a fascinating article about Toledo's Bishop Schrembs ministering to the deaf community of Toledo in 1917; click HERE. A representative of the St. John Institute for Deaf-Mutes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, met with the bishop and priests from St. John's University downtown. And Traffic Officer Malcolm O'Sullivan helped too!

From reading the article, I believe that the back row of people in the photo above were deaf Catholics who had been confirmed by Bishop Schrembs. Also, second from the right in the first row is Mgr. A. J. Schwertner, who was later Bishop of Wichita.

If you've traveled on US Rt. 23 north of Columbus, these spires may look familiar -- St. Mary's Church in Delaware.

The church is credited to the firm of Adolphus Druiding, a German-American architect active in the late 1800s. According to this list, he also worked on Toledo's St. Patrick Historic and Ottoville's Immaculate Conception. He also drew up plans for St. Rose in Perrysburg that ultimately were not used.

A Parish in Roachton

You may have seen in local news, the possibility of an old cemetery site in Middleton Township, not far from the Levis Commons area of Perrysburg. (13abc's report is HERE.) According to Fr. Lawrence Mossing's history of diocese, that would be the mission / parish of St. Mary, Mother of Sorrows church in Roachton, founded by German farmers who had been traveling to St. Joseph's in Maumee. The congregation existed from 1856 until 1881, often served as a mission by St. Rose in Perrysburg. (You can read more details in Volume IV of the Diocese history, pp. 184 - 186.)

If you've noticed that I haven't blogged in the past month, it's because I've been about a hundred times busier than usual. For about a year, now, I've been working with a design and web development firm in Oregon ( State, not town. ), and the suggestion was made that it would be worthwhile to move out here. Let's face facts. At my age, ignoring a suggestion like that would be foolhardy.
After a month of looking about, spending long days at the office, seeing the Pacific for the first time ( Only an hour away. ), and eating substantial amounts of locally produced, and extremely good, food, I think I made the right decision. An unexpected plus was the fact that the cooler, less humid summer, here, is doing wonders for my arthritis. Not sure yet, if that will continue in the dark, wet winters, but since the temperature in the town where I live rarely goes much below freezing and the average monthly snowfall is about what Toledo can get in a day, I suspect it'll be worth it.
I'm not going to disappear, since I have a year's supply of pictures to post, and will be buying more postcards of Northwest Ohio churches and getting photographs sent to me by e-mail. Meanwhile, Kevin's doing an excellent job of keeping things going here.
You can expect some pictures this weekend.
BTW, the picture is Cape Perpetua, named by Captain Cook, when he found it on St. Perpetua's Day, in 1778. Under that layer of fog is the Pacific.

Judge Gilbert Harmon

A Common Pleas Court judge in Lucas County, Gilbert Harmon was born in Thorndyke, Maine on March 30, 1834 and was a graduate of Tufts College. He arrived in Toledo in 1867, and in 1869 he became a Catholic, attending St. Francis de Sales church.

He died on August 17, 1909, still practicing law at the age of 75.

Claudia Quigley Murphy

Born in Toledo in 1863, Claudia Quigley Murphy attended school at the Ursuline Convent of the Sacred Heart. She began a career in journalism as a correspondent for the Cleveland "Catholic Knight," then served as managing editor of the Grand Rapids edition of the "Michigan Catholic." Later in life she acted as a home economics consultant to major companies, writing books and articles. Her book The History of the Art of Tablesetting can still be found in many libraries.

Providence Hospital, Sandusky

Above is an image of St. Raphael in stained glass, from 1962 when the St. Raphael chapel was being built in Sandusky's Providence Hospital. The stained glass was the work of Cleveland artist Frank Marchione. In 2001, Providence became part of Firelands Regional Medical Center. The chapel is now used as an education center, but the stained glass remains.
