Commemorating the First Mass in Ohio
The first Mass recorded in Ohio was at Somerset, Ohio, in September 1808 with Rev. Edward Fenwick officiating at the cabin of Jacob Dittoe.
A Memorial Mass will be concelebrated by Fr. Don Franks and Fr. Stephen Carmody on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 1:30 PM to commemorate the 208th Anniversary of the First Mass in State of Ohio.
The Memorial Mass will take place at The First Mass Rosary Garden, 5000 Stage Coach Road NW, Somerset, Ohio 43783. Immediately following Mass a brief update will be provided on the canonization initiative for Father Edward D. Fenwick O.P. and the plans recently approved by Columbus Bishop Fredrick F. Campbell to proceed with Phase II of the First Mass site development plan. The Phase II plan is to erect a replica 16’ by 20’ log cabin where future Memorial Masses can be held and presentations made so that others may hear and appreciate the beginnings of our Catholic Church in Ohio. A Dominican Rosary Procession will conclude the memorial celebration.
