Hm-m-m. Hard to put a finger on it. There is something about the old interior that is awkward, unbalanced, just too much. It's not simply that it is too ornate -- St. Anthony's or St. Patrick's is more so. It just doesn't fit, and that makes it look terribly dated.

To my utter astonishment, I believe I prefer the new version!
Why?
When the church was reconfigured, the seating capacity decreased by nearly half....from 1,000 to 600.
Still a beautiful church no matter how you configure the seating.

The absence of the murals might be part of it.
